ABSTINENCE & FASTING
(Invalids, pregnant and nursing mothers are exempt)
ABSTINENCE from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years of age and over on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays in Lent. Abstinence from all festive foods is encouraged on every day during Lent as part of the common discipline of this holy season.
FASTING is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one’s need, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

Divine Mercy Promise from Jesus to Saint Faustina
Diary entry #699Full Text of Entry No. 699, Diary of St. Faustina:On one occasion, I heard these words: My daughter, tell the whole world about My Inconceivable mercy. I desire that the Feast of Mercy be a refuge and shelter for all souls, and especially for poor sinners. On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy.The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity. Everything that exists has come forth from the very depths of My most tender mercy. Every soul in its relation to Me will contemplate My love and mercy throughout eternity. The Feast of Mercy emerged from My very depths of tenderness. It is My desire that it be solemnly celebrated on the first Sunday after Easter. Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of My Mercy.______________
A FEW KEY CLARIFICATIONS, based on the Church’s understanding of Divine Mercy Sunday:
Confession
The confession does not have to be on Divine Mercy Sunday itself. The Church explains that it may be made some days before (commonly understood as within about 20 days), as long as the soul is in the state of grace on Divine Mercy Sunday.
Holy Communion
Must be received on Divine Mercy Sunday itself, worthily.
Interior Disposition
The soul must approach with sincere repentance, trust in Divine Mercy, and a rejection of sin. This is essential. Jesus is not describing a mechanical formula.
When these conditions are met, Jesus promises a grace comparable to baptismal grace: forgiveness of all sins (guilt) and remission of all temporal punishment due to sin.
